What is Diwali?

Diwali meaning “rows of lighted lamps”, is a five-day festival of lights symbolising new beginnings, the victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance.

During Diwali, celebrants illuminate their homes with small oil lamps and colourful art circle patterns and partake in family feasts. People perform worship ceremonies of Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity and wealth, and share gifts to honour the goddess.

The festival begins with Dhanteras, where people buy gold jewellery to bring good luck.

The front of these gold bars depicts a small oil lamp cupped in two hands with two partial lotus flowers just below on either side of the bar. The back of the bars shows an image of Lakshmi sitting in a lotus flower. She has several items in her four hands – a citron, a club, a shield and a vessel containing amrita.
