What is the Lion of England?
The Lion of England is a traditional symbol of courage, bravery and strength. The lion is one of the first animals to appear in England’s royal emblems and has featured on the shield of England for as long as it has existed. Even though lions are not native to England, there were no animals at the time that seemed to possess English courage, strength, dignity and pride.
The Lion of England became a royal beast in the twelfth century during the reign of Richard I (1118-99). Henry VIII used the Lion of England as his heraldry (a symbol to show people who you are in battle/tournaments ) and remains an iconic, heraldic symbol of England today.
Coin Design
The striking coin depicts a furious and bold lion protecting a shield bearing the impaled arms, a combination of Henry VIII’s and Jane Seymour’s coat of arms. The lion with a crown on its head crouches down, guarding the shield with its mouth wide open showing its teeth.
The design includes security features as the background behind the lion is formed of radical lines.
Around both the silver and gold coins border is the inscription ‘LION OF ENGLAND’ along with the coin’s purity and weight.
The obverse side of the 2022 British Silver Tudor Beasts Lion Coin comes with a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
