Tudor Beasts Coin Collection Background
During the reign of Henry VIII, majestic beasts stood guard over the moat of Hampton Court Palace, representing the King and the powerful Tudor dynasty. They were chosen to symbolise strength, leadership and courage.
All ten coins of the Royal Tudor Beasts collection have been designed by David Lawrence who is an illustrator and sculptor with more than 30 years experience which includes coin design.
The first of the series, The Tudor Beasts Lion of England is also available in 1oz gold, 10oz silver and 1/4oz gold.
History of The Tudor Beasts
The Royal Mint are honouring the heraldic symbols of one of the nation’s most powerful dynasties, the Tudor King Henry VIII, with the new Royal Tudor Beasts Collection. The collection is represented by ten stone beasts, both mythical and real, that line the Moat Bridge at Henry VIII’s most famous residence, Hampton Court. The beasts represent the lineage of Henry VIII and Jane Seymour, his third wife.
The Lion of England which represents English courage, strength, dignity and pride carries a shield bearing a combination of Henry VIII’s and Jane Seymour’s coat of arms. The lion is one of the first animals to appear in England’s royal emblems and has featured on the shield of England for as long as it has existed. Even though lions are not native to England, there were no animals at the time that seemed to possess English courage, strength, dignity and pride.
The Lion of England became a royal beast in the twelfth century during the reign of Richard I (1118-99). Henry VIII used the Lion of England as his heraldry (a symbol to show people who you are in battle/tournaments ) and remains an iconic, heraldic symbol of England today.
As well as being highly competitively priced, Tudor Beasts coins are UK legal tender and hence Capital Gains Tax free. By purchasing UK coins eligible for CGT exemption, you can avoid paying tax over the profit you make, the amount of this CGT free profit won’t affect or decrease the limit of tax free profit on your other investments either.
