Who is Captain America?
Captain America is a fictional superhero from American comic books by Marvel Comics. He was designed as a patriotic supersoldier who often fought the Axis powers of World War II and was a popular character during the wartime period. He first appeared in a comic in December 1940, with Captain America punching Adolf Hitler. The popularity of superheroes decreased following the war and the Captain America comic book was discontinued in 1950 before being revived in 1964.
The character wears a costume bearing an American flag and utilizes a nearly indestructible shield which he throws as a projectile. Captain America is the alter ego of Steve Rogers, a frail young man enhanced to the peak of human perfection to aid the United States government’s efforts in World War II. Near the end of the war, he gets trapped in ice and survives in suspended animation until he gets revived in the present day.
His popularity increased in 2011 after he starred in his own movie ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’, and he’s been featured in many of the Marvel films since. As the leader of the Avengers, Captain America is now ranked the 6th top comic-book character of all time (IGN).
Coin Design
The designs on The Perth Mint’s Tuvalu Marvel Captain America coin series have mainly been inspired from the comic book depictions of each superhero, and not the Marvel Cinematic Universe itself.
The coin’s reverse features a striking pose of Captain America with a gloss finish. Looking poised and ready for action with his shield up, Captain America stands side on, with his muscles tensed and a look of determination on his face. The stars and stripes of the American flag are embedded behind him with a matt finish, with the title ‘Captain America’ below the Marvel logo appearing just in front. The Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II with a proof-like finish can be found on the obverse.
Tuvalu, the tiny South Pacific island nation started to develop a strong reputation for these exciting superhero coins. The series debuted in 2017 and now has installments of Spiderman, Thor, Black Panther, Iron Man, Deadpool and now, Captain America!
