A new Canadian Maple Leaf coin is produced by the Royal Canadian Mint and issued by the Canadian government each year. The maple leaf is the national symbol of Canada. It appears on the Canadian flag and it’s no surprise that it also appears on their official bullion coins.

History of The Canadian Maple Leaf Coin
The coin was first introduced in 1979. All versions of the coin have carried a similar design with the obverse featuring a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II and the reverse featuring the iconic Maple Leaf.
Three different portraits of Queen Elizabeth II have been used since 1979.
Arnold Machin’s ’39-year-old portrait’ from 1979 to 1989
Dora de Pédery-Hunt’s ’64-year-old portrait’ from 1990 to 2004
Susanna Blunt’s ’79-year-old portrait’ from 2005 to present
The coin comes in four different precious metals: Gold, Silver, Platinum and Palladium. All are produced at the original Royal Canadian Mint building in Ottawa.
The Gold Coin
The 24 carat gold Canadian Maple Leaf coins come in 1oz, 1/2oz, 1/4oz, 1/10oz, 1/20oz and “maple gram” denominations. All have a 999.9 fineness.
The respective face values are $50, $20, $10, $5, $1 and $0.5 and the respective gold content amounts are 31.1g, 15.55g, 7.77g, 3.11g, 1.55g and 1g.
The Silver Coin
The Silver Canadian Maple Leaf Coin is a 999.9 pure silver bullion coin that was first introduced in 1988. It has been issued every year since. It has a diameter of 38mm, weighs 31.1g and has a face value of $5.
The Platinum Coin
The Platinum Maple Leaf Coin was also first introduced in 1988. It was issued annually in several denominations until it was discontinued in 2002. The 1oz coin with a purity of 999.5 made a comeback in 2009 and has been issued every year since.

The Palladium Coin
The 1oz Palladium Maple Leaf Coin has a disjointed history compared to the other Maple Leaf coins. It was first produced in 2005 and ran until 2007. There was a one-off year of production in 2009 before they were fully reintroduced in 2015 and have appeared on an annual basis ever since. They have a purity of 999.5.
