The 2027 Britannia 1oz Gold Coin is a British gold bullion coin minted by The Royal Mint. The year 2027 marks the 40th anniversary of the introduction of the Britannia gold coin. To commemorate this milestone, the 2027 coin features a “40” privy mark, along with a textured background incorporating the anniversary number.
The Britannia takes its name from the iconic female personification of Britain, which has appeared on British coinage for more than 2,000 years, dating back to the Roman occupation. The modern Britannia gold bullion series was first introduced by The Royal Mint in 1987 and has since become one of the UK’s most recognised gold bullion coins, with an established reputation among collectors and investors worldwide.
The Britannia also incorporates a range of security features designed to make the coin difficult to counterfeit. These include a latent image, surface animation, tincture lines and micro-text, all integrated into the coin’s design.
Obverse:
The obverse of the 2027 King Charles III Britannia 1oz Gold Coin features the official portrait of King Charles III, designed by Martin Jennings. The portrait shows the King facing left without a crown. The sculptor’s initials, “M.J.”, appear at the bottom of the portrait, alongside the inscription “CHARLES III D.G.REX.F.D”.
Reverse:
The reverse features the classic figure of Britannia, designed by Philip Nathan, with the artist’s name “NATHAN” displayed at the bottom of the design. The reverse also incorporates the special 40th anniversary elements, including the textured background and “40” privy mark.
With a face value of £100, the 2027 Britannia 1oz Gold Coin is legal tender in the United Kingdom. UK legal tender gold coins such as the Britannia are generally exempt from Capital Gains Tax (CGT), while investment gold is also generally VAT-free.
