The Royal Mint’s three-coin collection celebrates the charming myths and legends that have been told for generations. The series first explored the beloved folktales Robin Hood and now has moved on to the legendary British king, King Arthur.
Who is King Arthur?
King Arthur was a legendary British king who appeared in many medieval histories and romances as the ruler of a knightly fellowship of the Round Table. He was the leader of the Celtic Britons in battles against Saxon invaders of Britain in the late 5th and early 6th centuries.
It is unknown whether King Arthur is based on an actual historical figure, but most historians do not believe so. Details of the stories of Arthur are mainly composed of Welsh mythology, English folklore and literary invention.
The King Arthur Coin Design
The spectacular coin design depicts the legendary king in the foreground, garbed in regal apparel, as he sits astride a horse and brandishes Excalibur, his legendary sword.
Camelot, the fabled castle where the Knights of the Round Table held court, is also discernible in the background.
