1oz Gold Lion And Eagle Coin – Design
The Royal Mint has partnered with John M. Mercanti, the ex Chief Engraver for the United States Mint. This coin beautifully brings together two national icons, the British Lion and the American Eagle. The reverse brings these two majestic animal icons into one synergetic offering.
John M. Mercanti, one of the finest engravers in US coinage history, created the design for the reverse of the coin and his both detailed, but simplistic approach has produced an iconic coin design. The obverse features the standard coinage portrait of His Majesty King Charles III by Martin Jennings.
The reverse of the coin shows the English Lion with the American Eagle in front, both looking to the right. The main lettering around the image reads “THE LION AND THE EAGLE” Around the rim of the coin, repeated nine times, are the words “1OZ FINE GOLD 999.9”.
The obverse of the coin has an effigy of King Charles III (facing left) designed by Martin Jennings and the words “CHARLES III•D•G•REX•F•D•100 POUNDS” around the edge.
