Britannia Coin Background

Gold continues to be desired, as it has been for centuries, for both its beauty and value, Britannia coins are an affordable way to appreciate its precious qualities. Britannia coins are a staple of any UK bullion investor’s portfolio for many different reasons, issued as UK legal tender, each coin is meticulously struck by The Royal Mint from 999.9 fine gold.

As well as being highly competitively priced, Britannia coins are UK legal tender and hence Capital Gains Tax free, which is an important factor to consider when choosing what to form of metal to buy. By purchasing UK coins eligible for CGT exemption you can avoid paying tax over the profit you make, the amount of this CGT free profit won’t affect or decrease the limit of tax free profit on your other investments either.

The UK government assures the weight and purity of each coin it produces, Britannia coins are designed for mass storage and safe transit, providing exceptional convenience for all gold bullion coin buyers.

The price of Britannia coins closely tracks the gold price due to their pure gold content, these coins are highly recognisable and highly liquid, there will always be someone waiting to buy them from you when you are ready to sell.

The Royal Mint also produces coins in 1oz Gold1/4oz Gold1/10oz Gold10oz Silver and 1oz Silver.

Britannia Coin Design

The legendary figure of Britannia has symbolised Britain’s strength and integrity on coinage since Roman times. Little wonder then that the Britannia with such a depth of history behind it, has been a popular choice with bullion investors ever since its introduction in 1987. This new specification combined with its tradition and integrity gives new life for today’s investment customer.

All 1oz gold Britannia coins contain one troy ounce (31.1035 grams) of gold.  From 1987 until 2012 Britannia coins weighed slightly more than a troy ounce due to being alloyed with other metals, pre-2013 they were produced in .917 fineness (or 22 carat gold) with the non-gold component being copper until 1989 and silver from 1990.

In 2013, the gold Britannia changed to a 999.9 fineness, 24 carat gold coin. Containing one troy ounce of gold, this uncirculated coin is known as the wafer shape as it is flatter than the usual thickness. The obverse features Ian Rank-Broadley’s fourth definitive UK coin portrait of Elizabeth II while the reverse bears the classic standing Britannia design by Philip Nathan.
