Diwali Facts
Diwali, or Festival of Lights, is one of the major festivals celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and some Buddhists. The name Diwali is derived from the Sanskrit term dipavali, meaning “row of lights”. One of the most important traditions in the Hindu religion during Diwali, is the lighting of candles around the house on the night of the new moon, inviting the presence of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth.
Diwali, which lasts for five days, is one of the most popular festivals celebrated by Hindus and generally symbolises the victory of light over darkness. Diwali is also celebrated with feasting, fireworks and the giving of gifts such as gold and silver.
Lakshmi Gold Bar
The front of the gold bar depicts a small oil lamp cupped in two hands with two partial lotus flowers just below on either side of the bar. The words “Baird & Co BUILLION MERCHANTS”, the weight and fineness are also inscribed. The back of the bar shows an image of Lakshmi, the Goddess of Wealth, sitting in a lotus flower with several items in her four hands – they are said to be a citron, a club, a shield and a vessel containing amrita.
