Robin Hood Coin Background
The Royal Mint is celebrating the legendary hero Robin Hood with this brand new coin, the first in a new bullion collection inspired by myth and legend. According to his legend, he was a highly skilled archer and swordsman and is said to have stolen from the rich and given to the poor.
He became a popular folk figure in the late Middle Ages, and the earliest known ballads featuring him are from the fourteenth century. There were also a number of characters associated with Robin Hood including his lover, Maid Marian, his band of outlaws, the Merry Men, his right-hand man, Little John, and his chief opponent, the Sheriff of Nottingham.
Robin Hood is considered one of the best-known tales of English folklore. There have been numerous variations and adaptations of the story over the subsequent years, and the story continues to be widely represented in literature, film, and television.
The Royal Mint produces Robin Hood coins in 1oz Gold and 1oz Silver.
Robin Hood Coin Design
This is the first coin in a new bullion collection inspired by the myth and legend of Robin Hood. Jody Clark’s depiction of the character features him hidden amongst the branches of Sherwood Forest, knelt down and poised with a bow and arrow ready for action.
The hero of folklore will soon be followed by two more coins inspired by the tale, the courageous heroine Maid Marian and Robin Hood’s trusted companion, Little John.
Maid Marian Coin Background
This is the second coin in the Robin Hood series. Firstly celebrating the story of the legend himself and The Royal Mint have now moved onto the heroine Marian, one of his loyal companions.
It was rumoured that she collected information for their joyous group and was a valued member. Much like the rest, also loved by the people of England.
Although Maid Marian was not depicted in the earlier writings, she has been noted as being one of the most prominent female roles of the time.
The Royal Mint also produces Maid Marian coins in 1oz Silver and as part of the Silver Myths and Legends three coin set.
Little John Coin Background
This is the third coin in the Myths and Legends Robin Hood series. Firstly celebrating the story of the legend himself, The Royal Mint have now moved onto Little John, one of his loyal companions.
Little John is one of Robin Hood’s ‘Merry Men’ and, along with Will Scarlett, Friar Tuck, Much and Maid Marian, they were said to have lived together in Sherwood Forest, near Nottingham. Little John was considered to be Robin Hood’s second in command. Contrary to his name, Little John is thought to have been a giant man, with a warrior like build.
