Robin Hood Coin Background and Design

The first coin in the Royal Mints bullion collection inspired by myths and legends. According to legend, Robin Hood was a highly skilled archer and swordsman and is said to have stolen from the rich and given to the poor.

He became a popular folk figure in the late Middle Ages, and the earliest known ballads featuring him are from the fourteenth century. There were also a number of characters associated with Robin Hood including his lover, Maid Marian, his band of outlaws, the Merry Men, his right-hand man, Little John, and his chief opponent, the Sheriff of Nottingham.

Robin Hood is considered one of the best-known tales of English folklore. There have been numerous variations and adaptations of the story over the subsequent years, and the story continues to be widely represented in literature, film, and television.

Jody Clark’s depiction of the character features him hidden amongst the branches of Sherwood Forest, knelt down and poised with a bow and arrow ready for action.

Maid Marian Coin Background and Design

The heroine, Maid Marian, was the second coin released in the Myths and Legends series.

One of Robin Hood’s loyal companions, it was rumoured that she collected information for their joyous group and was a valued member. Much like the rest, she was also loved by the people of England.

Although Maid Marian was not depicted in the earlier writings, she has been noted as being one of the most prominent females of the time.

Jody Clark’s depiction of the character features her hiding behind a tree, stealthily looking on, observing what appears to be a pre-cursor to an ambush with a quiver brimming with arrows strapped to her back.

Little John Coin Background and Design

This is the third coin in the Myths and Legends series.

Little John is one of Robin Hood’s ‘Merry Men’  and, along with Will Scarlett, Friar Tuck, Much and Maid Marian, they were said to have lived together in Sherwood Forest, near Nottingham. Little John was considered to be Robin Hood’s second in command. Contrary to his name, Little John is thought to have been a giant man, with a warrior like build.

Jody Clark’s depiction of the character features Little John, holding a wooden staff in Sherwood Forest.

The Royal Mint produces all three coins in the set in 1oz Gold and 1oz Silver.
