What is the Wiener Philharmoniker?

Wiener Philharmoniker is translated to the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. It is one of the most famous symphony orchestras in the world.

The first philharmonic concert took place in Vienna on 28th March 1842. Since then, subscription concerts (season ticket concerts) have been performed. There are 10-11 subscription concerts that are performed every year. Including the Nicolai concert (since 1887) and the traditional New Year’s Concert (since 1940).

The orchestra still focuses on classical symphony and is complemented by Austrian symphonic music of the 19th century.

In order to become a member of the orchestra, each person has to endure a long strict process of demonstrating their capability for a minimum of three years’ performance for the opera and ballet.

NEW The Austrian Mint's 2022 Silver & Gold Philharmoniker Coins

The Coin Design

The 2022 coin features the same striking design as when it debuted in 1989.

The design features a set of musical instruments representing the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. The instruments shown include a cello, two violins, a bassoon behind the cello, a French horn and a harp behind. Arched around the top above the image of the musical instruments is the inscription ‘WIENER PHILHARMONIKER’.

The obverse design of the coin features the famous pipe organ within the Musikverein’s Golden Hall, recognised around the world as the backdrop to the Philharmonic’s New Year concerts. The pipe organ now installed in the Golden Concert Hall is the second during the lifetime of the building. The first was installed in 1872 and replaced by the existing pipe organ in 1907.

Above the organ, the German words “REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH” (Republic of Austria) stand in a semi-circle, while the weight, purity and year-date, stand beneath the organ. The edge of the coin is reeded giving protection from counterfeits.
