What is the Falcon of Plantagenets?

The white falcon has had many appearances over the ages. It was first used by Edward III, who chose the symbol to embody his love of hawking. It was employed by his grandson Richard II as a royal badge, and most recently the falcon at The Queen’s coronation held a shield with a badge depicting a second white falcon within an open golden fetterlock (padlock).

The falcon is a preeminent symbol of speed, vision and loyalty. Falcon symbolism also reminds us to be vigilant and use proper planning and strategy. Success all depends on your ability to act quickly.

If you’d asked a medieval Englishman, his main association with the Falcon and Fetterlock would have been the house of York and with King Richard III (more famously known for a rose). The Falcon is the portrayal of a ruthless and relentless pursuit of goals through destruction, which was cemented after King Richard III’s feared and gruelling rule.

The Fetterlock

The fetterlock and the falcon were popular emblems in the Houses of both York and Lancaster, as they descended through Edward III’s younger sons John of Gaunt and Edmund of Langley. There were rumors that at that time, the fetterlock was closed, perhaps to show they had no claim to the throne. Richard of York (the original rebel against Henry VI), had always had the fetterlock opened prior to that.

The Plantagenets Family

Thereafter, the falcon became an emblem of the Plantagenets family. The Plantagenets family, also through vengeful aggression, became the greatest English dynasty of all time. George R. R. Martin has also commented on the referral to these legends within his iconic book series, Game of Thrones.

Queen’s Beasts Falcon Coin Design

The Falcon of Plantagenets is the 6th addition to The Royal Mint‘s Queen’s Beast series. On this coin design, the Falcon sits atop a shield with a partially open fetterlock in its grasp. The falcon has both his wings opened slightly to fill the centre of the coin.

The obverse design depicts the fifth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, and the monetary denomination of £5. Both the obverse and reverse are designed by British Coin Designer Jody Clark, creator of the latest definitive portrait of The Queen on UK coinage.
