Headquartered in Hanau, Germany, Heraeus is a global precious metals and technology group.

History of Heraeus Precious Metals

Heraeus family links to Hanau, go back to the 17th century. The famous motif (hand with roses) is part of their family crest which was designed by Isaac Heraeus (1636 -1676). He was an apothecary or modern-day pharmacist.

The Heraeus group of companies can trace its origins back to 1851 when Wilhelm Carl Heraeus began developing new applications for platinum refining.

By 1900 they had 40 employees and were growing thanks to their innovative application of precious metals for industrial use. At the start of the second world war in 1939 the workforce was 1,000 strong but it wasn’t until the late 1950’s that they started to expand internationally.

Between 2009 and 2011, the business group was split into two separate businesses, namely Precious Metals, and Materials Technology. There was a further split in 2015 with 11 global business units established: Metal Management, Photovoltaics, Performance Products, Electronics, Chemicals, Medical Components, New Businesses, Medical, Electro-Nite, Quarzglas and Noblelight.

There are now over 100 companies in the entire group, which in total employs 12,500 people.

Metal Management

Heraeus offer an extensive product range of physical precious metals. They source precious metals for processing in their refineries from recycled products as well as mining.

Gold bar production is carried out in Hanau Germany, Hong Kong, Newark (US) and also in Switzerland at the giant Argor-Heraeus precious metals refinery in which Heraeus has a shareholding.

In gold and silver, Heraeus produces large bars for the wholesale market, smaller bars for the investment sector, gold and silver grain for industry and the jewellery sector. In platinum and palladium, they produce large bars, investment bars, and sponge (used in industry).
