The Royal Mint‘s new coin collection celebrates the charming myths and legends that have been told for generations. The series first explored the folk hero himself, Robin Hood and the heroine Maid Marian and now has moved on to his second-in-command, Little John.
Who is Little John?
Robin Hood is considered one of the best-known tales of English literature. The tale follows a skilled archer and the group of Merry Men who steals from the rich to give to the poor. Robin Hood has proven to be one of pop culture’s most-loved folktales through the countless portrayals in books, television and film.
Little John is Robin Hood’s trusted sidekick and loyal best friend. He serves as Robin Hood’s chief lieutenant and second-in-command of the Merry Men.
Little John’s name is an ironic reference to his very tall height, as he is usually portrayed as an enormous 7-foot-tall warrior. He was the master of the quarterstaff, which was Little John’s weapon of choice.
The Coin Design
Each coin in the Robin Hood series incorporated the scenery of Sherwood Forset in different ways to represent the other traits of the characters.
The coin depicts Little John as strong, confident and alert as he stands boldly in between the thick tree trunks of Sherwood Forset. He has his quarterstaff in his hands, looking into the distance, ready for action.
