Introducing the 2022 UK Gold Sovereign coin, available in full size, half size and quarter size.

What is the Royal Coat of Arms?

The Royal Coat of Arms is used to identify the person who is the Head of State, which for the UK is The Queen. It has developed over the years to reflect the Monarchy and the country.

The Royal Coat of Arms is used in the administration and government of the country and appears on coins and churches.

It features a shield that is divided into four quarters. Each quarter represents emblems of different parts of the UK. This includes the three lions of England, the lion of Scotland and the harp of Ireland. Wales does not play a role because when the Act of Union came about Wales was already integral to England.

To the right side of the shield is the English lion and the left is the Scottish unicorn. The Royal crown stands on top of the shield and underneath is the motto of the Sovereign, Dieu et mon droit (‘God and my right’).

Each member of the Royal Family has a Coat of Arms these are broadly similar to The Queen’s with slight differences to identify them.
