The China Gold Coin Incorporation (CGCI) launched the Panda Coin Series in 1982 making this the 40th anniversary of the series.
The Panda Bear
Giant panda bears are native to China where they are considered a national treasure. The panda has an important place in Chinese culture and history where it symbolises friendship and peace.
The panda was often compared to the yin and yang because of its black and white spots, standing in stark contrast to one another.
The panda’s calm demeanour was a demonstration of how, when balanced, the yin yang were harmonious and peaceful and many people revere it as a symbol of good luck.
The Coin Design
This year marks the 40th Anniversary of the Chinese Panda Coin and the 2022 design incorporates a 40th-anniversary mark of the digits 40 with a panda in the 0.
This special coin design features two adorable pandas sliding down the hill in the snow. One panda is going headfirst as it slides down on its stomach. The other panda slides on its back with its arms in the air, making the coin endearing and playful.
The significance of snow pays tribute to the 2022 Winter Olympic Games, which are being held in China for the first time.
The obverse bears the image of the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, the earliest building of The Temple of Heaven in Beijing. This round roofed palace is where the emperor held worship ceremonies, praying for good weather and abundant harvests.
The coins border band carries the Chinese characters for “People’s Republic of China” with the year of issue at the base.
