We are excited to announce the arrival of the new 2023 silver Kookaburra coin.
This coin is part of the 2023 Perth Mint Coin Series, including The Lunar Year of the Rabbit and the Kangaroo coins.
Considered the flagship coin series of the Perth Mint, silver kookaburras were first introduced to the market in 1990 and are the longest-running bullion program from the mint.
What is The Kookaburra Bird?
The Kookaburra is part of the kingfisher family and is primarily native to Australia.
Kookaburras are a well-known symbol of Australia and have been nicknamed ‘The Laughing Jackass’ because of their distinctive song. They are usually very territorial birds and have been found to build nests in trees and termite mounds.
They are carnivores and don’t drink much water. Like birds of prey, kookaburras receive their moisture through the blood of the prey they hunt, including mice, snakes, insects, small reptiles, and the young of other birds.
The Coin Design
The Kookaburra coins are extremely popular with investors due to a traditionally low mintage and because the reverse design is changed with each issue making them highly collectable.
The 2023 coin design features a beautiful image of two Kookaburras perching on their branches. The NSW bush flower waratah is also featured, this iconic Australian flower is also the NSW floral emblem.
The inscription follows the same design as last year with the inscription of ‘KOOKABURRA’ and is on the coin’s border, falling from the top of the coin to the right.
The micro-laser-engraved security letter is on the right side underneath the inscription, along with the weight, purity and year-date inscription placed to the left of the Kookaburra.
