We are excited to announce the second design of the 2021 1oz Silver American Eagle Coin has arrived at Bleyer.
The U.S. Mint launched the American Eagle Coin Series in 1986. In honour of the 35th anniversary of the bullion series, a new design has been introduced midway through 2021.
What is the American Eagle?
The American Eagle, also known as the Bald Eagle, is the national animal of the United States of America.
The American Eagle was chosen because it signifies strength, freedom and independence. It was also then believed that the Bald Eagle only existed in North America.
Its first appearance was on the Massachusetts copper cent in 1776 however it did not become a National Symbol for America until the Second Continental Congress selected it on 20th June 1782. The American Eagle was placed as the centrepiece for the Great Seal of the United States.
From then on, the American Eagle was presented as America’s emblem and symbolises the spirit of the nation and those who live there. It still appears today on official documents, many U.S coins, flags, public buildings, and within the military and government agencies.
The Coin Design
The 2021 American Eagle Type II Silver Coin has a brand new design and a more life-like depiction of an American Bald Eagle.
The design shows a beautifully detailed and majestic eagle coming into land with its wings flexed back and a large oak branch in its talons. The oak branch holds significance because oak is the national tree of the United States and is a symbol of strength.
The obverse of the coin features the classic design by Adolph A.Weinman. The Lady Liberty is draped in an American Flag, walking towards the sun as it rises on the horizon.
On the left is the inscription of ‘In God We Trust’ and located under is Weinman’s initials “AW” along with the year date.

The U.S. Mint has also introduced an enhanced security feature of a reeded edge variation on the coin to overcome counterfeits.
