The Angel Coin Background

The Angel is one of the most intriguing coins in numismatic history. Its name comes from the obverse design, which depicts the Archangel Michael defeating Satan, shown as a dragon.

First introduced in the 1460s during the reign of Edward IV, the Angel replaced the noble as a smaller denomination. It later became closely associated with royal “touching ceremonies,” where monarchs were believed to heal sufferers of scrofula, also known as the “king’s evil.” During these rituals, the coin would be touched, sometimes pierced, and worn around the neck on a white ribbon as a symbol of protection and healing. Today, this historic coin has been reimagined for a 2026 bullion range. The new release features an innovative security pattern on the reverse to help prevent counterfeiting, alongside a striking contemporary interpretation of St Michael by designer Sandra Deiana. The range includes 1oz and 1/4oz gold editions, as well as a 1oz silver edition.
