Big Ben, 2017 Coin Design
Big Ben is the first offering in the series of iconic landmarks of Britain range.
The coin depicts the Elizabeth Tower that dominates the skyline at the northern end of the Houses of Parliament. It is said to be one of London’s most iconic and recognisable landmarks. But while the tourists might refer to the clock as ‘Big Ben’, it is actually the great bell inside that bears the famous nickname, possibly used in honour of Sir Benjamin Hall, First Commissioner for Works 1855-1858. The original bell was cast in 1856 but quickly cracked. It was recast in 1858, but was to suffer the same fate. Finally a lighter hammer was used to strike a different section of the still damaged bell, giving us the distinctive sound, a musical note E, we know today. It is a sound that has become an unmistakable thread in the very fabric of British life.

Trafalgar Square, 2018 Coin Design
Trafalgar Square is the third offering in the series of iconic landmarks of Britain range following The Big Ben coin which was released in 2017 and the Tower Bridge which was released in 2018.
Overlooked by Nelson’s Column and guarded by the four bronze lions at its base, Trafalgar Square is one of London’s most vibrant public spaces.
Renowned for its fountains, architect John Nash designed Trafalgar Square as a cultural space, with the National Gallery housed on the north side. Completed in 1843 at a cost of £47,000, Nelson’s Column honours British naval hero Admiral Horatio Nelson who died defeating the French and Spanish fleets at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Edwin Landseer’s lions were added later in 1867.
Since it was officially named in the 1830s it has remained a living square at the heart of the capital. A firm favourite with tourists, thousands of people visit Trafalgar Square every year. Come 31 December, it’s always packed with revellers welcoming in the New Year. During times of national celebration, it fills with cheering, flag-waving crowds. Frivolity masks a more serious side – the largest square in the city is a centre of national democracy and the scene of peaceful protest.
Buckingham Palace, 2019 Coin Design
Buckingham Palace is the fourth offering in the series of iconic landmarks of Britain range following The Big Ben coin which was released in 2017 and the Tower Bridge and Trafalgar Square which were released in 2018.
Standing at the top of the tree-lined avenue known as The Mall, at the very heart of London, is Buckingham Palace, the British monarch’s main official residence.
With nearly 800 rooms and 40 acres of grounds, the palace is one of Britain’s most iconic buildings. Originally a town house built by The Duke of Buckingham, it was purchased by George III for his wife Queen Charlotte in 1761, before his son George IV commissioned the architect John Nash to renovate it as a palace. Queen Victoria would become the first monarch to use Buckingham Palace as their official residence in 1837. Stepping out onto the famous balcony during the celebrations for the opening of the Great Exhibition in 1851, she started a tradition that endures to the present day.
A firm favourite with tourists, you can tell when the Monarch is in residence because the Royal Standard flies on the flagpole. Also, if you visit at the right time, you can even see inside: the palace is open to the public for ten weeks every summer. For those lucky enough to receive an invite, up to 50,000 people visit the palace each year as The Monarch’s guests at banquets, lunches, dinners, receptions and garden parties.
