Panda Coin Background
The Chinese Gold Panda was first issued in 1982 and is struck in pure .999 fine gold. Panda coins denominated in troy ounces were discontinued by the Chinese mint at the end of 2015 because China adopted the metric system.
The China Gold Coin Incorporation (CGCI) produces Panda coins in a variety of different sizes including; 1g Gold, 3g Gold, 8g Gold, 30g Gold and 30g Silver.
Panda Coin Design
On the reverse side the 2023 panda coin design features engravings of giant pandas climbing a tree. A panda is reaching out for another panda laying on a tree’s branch and is surrounded by foliage. The Panda coin is different from many other coins. The coins always feature a panda bear or bears in a new position or pose and, with the exception of 2001 and 2002, all coins have an annually-changing design that’s unique to that year.
The obverse always bears the image of the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, the earliest building of The Temple of Heaven in Beijing, which is a massive site of worship and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This round roofed palace is where the emperor held worship ceremonies, praying for good weather and abundant harvests. The coins border band carries the Chinese characters for “People’s Republic of China” with the year of issue at the base. The reverse of the coin depicts the denomination, weight and fineness.
