King George III 200th Anniversary Gold Quarter Sovereign, 2020 (Pre-Owned)

King George III’s 200th Anniversary is celebrated with the world’s first quarter sovereign to contain authentic George III gold. With an original mintage of just 3,999 coins the design features one of the most important gold coins of his reign.

King George III died on 29th January 1820 and was Britain’s longest reigning King with a reign of 59 years.

This coin is the first gold quarter sovereign to contain authentic Georgian gold from George III’s reign, having been minted from a unique “heritage mixture” of antique and new 22 carat gold.   The design of this quarter sovereign features one of the most important coins from George III’s reign, the 1762 gold quarter guinea, which was only minted once during the King’s long reign.

The obverse of this gold quarter sovereign features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II and is dated 2020.

This gold quarter sovereign comes presented in a dark blue cardboard presentation box with a certificate of authenticity and an accompanying booklet about George III and some of the coins that were issued during his long reign by Stewart Binns.

Sovereign Coin Background

Gold continues to be desired, as it has been for centuries, for both its beauty and value, sovereign coins are an affordable way to appreciate its precious qualities. The Sovereign has been made by The Royal Mint for over 500 years and is internationally recognised all over the world for its monetary value. Sovereigns are a staple of any UK bullion investors portfolio for many different reasons, issued as UK legal tender, each coin is meticulously struck by The Royal Mint from 22 carat gold.

As well as being highly competitively priced, sovereigns are UK legal tender and hence Capital Gains Tax-free, which is an important factor to consider when choosing what to form of metal to buy. By purchasing UK coins eligible for CGT exemption you can avoid paying tax over the profit you make, the amount of this CGT free profit won’t affect or decrease the limit of tax-free profit on your other investments either.

Sovereign Coin Design

The Sovereign has been used in British currency ever since King Henry VII instructed The Royal Mint to produce a new currency in 1489 and features a timeless design.

There have been Sovereigns in circulation since 1489 with the Half Sovereign being first produced in 1544 during King Henry VIII reign. The modern Sovereign Gold coin was first issued in 1817 when the sovereign replaced the Guinea, it became legal tender in the United Kingdom with a face value of £1 Sterling.

The ‘Saint George and the Dragon’ design inspires integrity and strength. The Sovereign is traded, respected and admired all over the world and has been an integral part of UK coin design for many centuries.

Issued by The Royal Mint, full Gold Sovereigns are one of the most popular and best known gold coins in the world. Gold Sovereigns are sought by both collectors and investors alike, they offer a sense of luxury, history and symbolism that no other coin can match. With its bold St George and the Dragon design, it has become an internationally recognised symbol of unrivalled accuracy, integrity and strength. To this day, it remains trusted, traded, respected and admired the world over.

Tristan da Cunha Commemorative Coins

Tristan has a Commemorative Coins Ordinance which enables the Governor (with the prior approval of the British Secretary of State for Foreign & Commonwealth Affairs) to ’cause coins to be made and issued to commemorate notable events of importance to Tristan’. Coins made and issued under the provisions of this law are, in fact, legal tender on the Island (not that they would ever be used as such because their collectible or metal value is likely to exceed their face value).

In November 2004, with the approval of the Governor and the Secretary of State, the Tristan Government entered into a five year agreement with the Commonwealth Mint & Philatelic Bureau Ltd (formerly known as London Mint Ltd). This innovative partnership enables Tristan to select and approve designs for proposed issues, with the company arranging production and distribution to collectors via established dealerships worldwide.

All new coins are inscribed “Tristan da Cunha” which includes this gold quarter sovereign. Older coins issued 2005 to 2016 may be inscribed “TDC”.
