This gold 3 coin Guinea set was minted for the historic occasion of Queen Elizabeth II becoming the longest reigning monarch in history. This happened on 9th September 2015, where she surpassed her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria.
This 3 coin guinea set features the quarter and half guinea in rose gold, the last time these coins were ever printed in this colouration. The full guinea is printed in a yellow-gold colouration.
History of the Guinea
The guinea was considered UK legal tender for a significant period of time. Between the years 1717 and 1816, the guinea was locked at a value of 21 shillings, becoming a stable and widespread currency for use in England.
The guinea was a symbol of the British empire, being used primarily during the golden age of the colonies. It was used largely for inter-colony trade, with the sovereign being the primary coinage in England. This 3 coin gold guinea set symbolises this history beautifully.
Note that since the guinea is no longer legal UK tender, the coin is not exempt from CGT.
