Lunar Rabbit Coin Background

In 2023, we celebrate the 4th animal in the 12-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac. This 1oz gold lunar rabbit coin features the rabbit which is said to bestow intelligence, creativity, vigilance and compassion on those born under its influence in 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011 and 2023.

Lunar Rabbit Coin Design

The 1oz Gold Lunar Rabbit design includes the inscription ‘RABBIT 2023’, the Chinese character for ‘rabbit’ and The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark.  The coin portrays a leaping rabbit among grasses with feathery plumes. This is the third series of the Australian Lunar coins which is now in its 25th year. The Perth Mint’s Series III Lunar collection began with the Year of the Mouse in 2020.

Issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965, the Jody Clark effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the 2022 year-date and the monetary denomination are shown on each coin’s obverse.

The Perth Mint Background

The Perth Mint opened in 1899 in response to the discovery of rich gold deposits in Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie. The heritage building was situated in the heart of Perth, the capital and largest city of Western Australia. It was Australia’s third branch of Britain’s Royal Mint – the others being the Sydney Mint and the Melbourne Mint (both closed). In 1970, the authority for The Perth Mint was transferred to the State of Western Australia. The Perth Mint gold and silver bullion coins have been issued as legal tender under the authority of the Australian Federal Government ever since.
