1/4oz Gold Australian Kangaroo Coin Background
The Australian Kangaroo (Australian Gold Nugget) is a gold bullion coin minted by the Perth Mint. The coins are available through Bleyer in denominations of 1/10oz, 1/4oz, 1oz of 24 carat gold. The nugget has legal tender status in Australia and is one of few legal tender bullion gold coins to change their design every year, another being the Chinese National coin. This and their limited annual mintage may, unlike for many other bullion coins, raise their numismatic value over the value of gold used.
The Gold Nugget Coin series was introduced in 1986 by Gold Corporation, a company wholly owned by the government of Western Australia, more commonly known by its trading name The Perth Mint.
1/4oz Gold Australian Kangaroo Coin Design
From 1986 to 1989, the reverse of these coins pictured various Australian gold nuggets. With the 1989 proof edition, the design was changed to feature different kangaroos, a more world-recognised symbol of Australia. The obverse of these 2024 kangaroo coins feature the Martin Jennings effigy of His Majesty the King, Charles III. To the bottom of the coin is the legal tender face value. The reverse is a depiction of a kangaroo looking over to the left with a wind-powered mill in the background.
The Perth Mint Background
The Perth Mint opened in 1899 in response to the discovery of rich gold deposits in Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie. The heritage building was situated in the heart of Perth, the capital and largest city of Western Australia. It was Australia’s third branch of Britain’s Royal Mint – the others being the Sydney Mint and the Melbourne Mint (both closed). In 1970, the authority for The Perth Mint was transferred to the State of Western Australia. The Perth Mint gold and silver bullion coins have been issued as legal tender under the authority of the Australian Federal Government ever since.
