The Royal Mint has announced the release of the 2027 Gold Sovereign, continuing the story of one of the world’s most recognised and enduring gold coins.

Following the end of the rose gold era in 2025, The Sovereign returned to its traditional yellow gold appearance in 2026. For 2027, that tradition continues, combining a design that has become synonymous with British coinage with the precision and security of modern minting.

Benedetto Pistrucci’s iconic portrayal of St George and the dragon once again graces the reverse of the 2027 Gold Sovereign, continuing a design tradition that dates back to 1817.

Renowned for its reliability and accuracy, The Sovereign’s weight is guaranteed to five decimal places, making it the most tightly specified coin in the world. The 2027 bullion coin also features unique security details across both sides of the coin.

Available as The Sovereign and The Half-Sovereign, the 2027 range brings together more than two centuries of iconic design, British heritage and physical gold ownership.

2027 Gold Sovereign Coin Design

The 2027 Gold Sovereign coin continues the return to traditional yellow gold that began with the 2026 bullion range.

At the heart of the coin is Benedetto Pistrucci’s legendary depiction of St George and the dragon, one of the most recognisable designs in British coinage.

First introduced to The Sovereign in 1817, Pistrucci’s design depicts St George on horseback defeating the dragon. More than two centuries later, it remains closely associated with The Sovereign and its long history.

The obverse bears the official coinage portrait of His Majesty King Charles III, designed by Martin Jennings.

The 2027 release also continues The Sovereign’s focus on security, with both sides of the bullion coin embellished with unique security features.

Precision remains another defining characteristic of the coin. The Sovereign’s weight is guaranteed to five decimal places, with The Royal Mint describing it as the most tightly specified coin in the world.

History of the Gold Sovereign

The history of the Gold Sovereign stretches back more than 500 years. The original Sovereign was commissioned by King Henry VII in 1489 as a symbol of royal authority. It was an impressive gold coin that helped establish a name that would eventually become recognised around the world.

After disappearing during the 17th century, The Sovereign was reintroduced in 1817 as part of Britain’s move to the gold standard.

It was during this period that Benedetto Pistrucci’s St George and the dragon first appeared on the coin.

The design would go on to become one of the defining features of The Sovereign. Despite changes in monarchs and developments in British coinage, St George and the dragon has continued to return throughout the coin’s history.

Today, The Sovereign remains closely associated with British minting heritage, precise specifications and physical gold ownership.

The 2027 Gold Sovereign continues that story, combining Pistrucci’s historic design with the precision and security of modern Royal Mint bullion production.
