The Royal Mint has released the 2026 The Angel Coin, reintroducing one of the most historic and symbolic designs in British numismatic history.
First issued during the reign of Edward IV in the 1460s, The Angel has long been associated with protection, resilience, and tradition. For 2026, this historic coin has been reimagined for a modern bullion collection, combining centuries of heritage with contemporary minting precision.
Featuring a contemporary interpretation of the Archangel Michael defeating the dragon, the 2026 release combines investment-grade precious metals with one of the most recognisable motifs in British coinage.

The 2026 The Angel Coin Design
The reverse design of the 2026 The Angel Coin features the Archangel Michael defeating Satan, depicted as a dragon, a design that has defined The Angel for centuries.
Created by Sandra Deiana, the 2026 interpretation introduces a contemporary visual style while preserving the symbolism historically associated with the coin. The engraving captures movement and detail, with the Archangel Michael shown triumphantly standing over the dragon beneath him.
Encircling the design is the Latin inscription:
“PER CRUCEM TUAM SALVA NOS CHRISTE REDEMPTOR”
Translated as “Through your cross save us, Christ Redeemer”, the inscription reflects the spiritual and historic origins of The Angel coin.
The reverse also incorporates an advanced security pattern designed to help protect against counterfeiting, combining traditional imagery with modern minting technology.
The obverse features the official coinage portrait of His Majesty Charles III.

History of The Angel Coin
The Angel is one of the most distinctive coins in British numismatic history.
First introduced during the reign of Edward IV in the 1460s, The Angel replaced the noble as a smaller denomination within England’s monetary system.
Its name originates from the design depicting the Archangel Michael defeating the dragon, symbolising the triumph of good over evil.
Over time, The Angel became closely associated with royal “touching ceremonies,” where monarchs were believed to heal sufferers of scrofula, often referred to as the “king’s evil.” During these ceremonies, Angel coins were sometimes touched by the monarch, pierced, and worn around the neck on white ribbons as symbols of healing and protection.
Today, The Angel remains one of the most recognisable historic British coin designs. The 2026 bullion release continues this legacy, combining centuries of symbolism with modern precious metals craftsmanship.
