Struck to Proof standard, the coin is presented in a Royal Mint display case and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. Upon release by The Royal Mint, the coin sold out within hours, with a strict limit of one per household.
This issue marks the first release in a new UK series dedicated to Innovation in Science, as well as the first official UK coin to honour Stephen Hawking.

The obverse features the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark, introduced in 2015.
Reverse
The reverse, designed by Edwina Ellis, depicts a black hole, referencing Hawking’s pioneering work in theoretical physics. The design is completed with the inscription “STEPHEN HAWKING” above.
