The Royal Mint has released another spectacular coin in the magnificent Queen’s Beast Series. We are super excited to announce the 2022 10oz Silver White Greyhound of Richmond Coin.
The 2oz Silver White Greyhound of Richmond bullion coin was already released in 2021, however, The Royal Mint has created a 10oz edition which is the final brilliant uncirculated addition to the series.
What is the White Greyhound of Richmond?
The greyhound stands for honour and has featured prominently in the history of the British royal family.
The greyhound was first portrayed by the royal family in the 14th century. John of Gaunt, the 1st Duke of Lancaster, chose to wear the image of a greyhound on his badge.
It was then used as an official royal beast by Edward III shortly after and became associated with all of his descendants in the House of Lancaster. It later became a symbol of the Tudor family when it was bestowed on Edmund Tudor by his half-brother Henry VI.
After slaying Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485, Edmund’s son was crowned Henry VII who used the white greyhound to proudly display his Tudor and Lancastrian ancestry.
In recent years, The White Greyhound of Richmond was chosen as the last of the ten ancestral heraldic beasts that lined the entrance to Westminster Abbey at The Queen’s coronation back in 1953.
The Coin Design
The 10oz bullion coin replicates the 2oz bullion coin design by Jody Clark.
The coin features a realistic and elegant representation of a greyhound bearing the badge of Richmond. In front stands a shield of Tudor livery with a crowned Tudor Rose.
The background features a secure chainmail texture, providing security against fraud and counterfeits.
