Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother, 80th Birthday Proof Commemorative Crown, 1980
“This crown is one of a number of silver crowns being issued in proof form in commemoration of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother’s 80th Birthday on 4th August 1980. Each crown is stuck in sterling silver and has a diameter of 38.61mm and a weight of 28.276 grams. The crown is a proof and therefore should not be handled outside the protective acrylic capsule unless gloves are worn. Fingerprints can destroy the proof quality of the crown.”
Coin Design -“The reverse of the crown depicts a radiating pattern of bows and lions surrounding a portrait of Her Majesty the Queen Mother. This design is an allusion to the Queen Mother’s family name of Bowes-Lyon. The design is by Professor Richard Guyatt. The obverse, which is common to all the crowns, bears the famous numismatic portrait of Her Majesty the Queen designed by Arnold Machin. This Design is featured on nearly all United Kingdom coinage since 1968.”
Commemoration of the Marriage between The Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer, 1981
“In commemoration of the marriage of His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer, The Royal Mint has been authorised to strike a commemorative coin. A maximum of only 250,000 coins will be issued in sterling silver in proof quality for world wide distribution.”
Coin Design -“The reverse of the coin features the profiles of The Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer in a contemporary and informal portrayal. The design was prepared by Philip Nathan, a former Royal Mint engraver. His initials “P.N.” can be seen just below the portrait of Prince Charles. The design on the obverse is the portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II created by Arnold Machin, RA, OBE. The obverse design has been depicted on nearly all United Kingdom coinage since 1968. It shows Her Majesty wearing the tiara which was a wedding present from her grandmother, the late Queen Mary.”
Queen Elizabeth II’s Silver Jubilee, 1977
“The coin in this case is one of a number of silver crown pieces being issued in proof form in commemoration of The Queen’s Silver Jubilee. Each of the crowns is struck in sterling silver and has a diameter of 38.61mm and a weight of 28.276 grammes.”
Coin Design -“The obverse of the United Kingdom crown is an equestrian portrait of The Queen by Arnold Machin. The Queen is shown in her uniform as Colonel-in-Chief of the Grenadier Guards, one of the uniforms worn by Her Majesty at the ceremony of Trooping the Colour. For he numismatist the design will recall the Coronation crown of 1953 and crowns of Edward VI, James I and Charles I with their handsome and often lively portraits of the Monarch on horseback. The reverse which is also by Arnold Machin shows, within a floral garland, the ampulla and annointing spoon that were used in the coronation ceremony. Renovated for the coronation of Charles II, these are believed to date respectively from the 14th and 12th centuries and are probably the oldest items in the Regalia to have remained in continual use.
