In 2016 the silver Panda was the first of it’s kind to be produced to a metric gram measurement rather than a troy ounce (31.1035g) of Silver. Panda coins denominated in troy ounces were discontinued by the Chinese mint at the end of 2015 because China has adopted the metric system, the 1oz silver Panda was effectively replaced by the 30g silver panda.

The Panda coin is different to many other coins due to the annually changing design. The obverse always bears the image of the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, the earliest building of The Temple of Heaven in Beijing.  This round roofed palace is where the emperor held worship ceremonies, praying for good weather and abundant harvests. The coins border band carries the Chinese characters for “People’s Republic of China” with the year of issue at the base. The reverse of the coin depicts the denomination, weight and fineness. The Panda bear illustrations change every year.
