Austrian Philharmoniker Background

The Austrian Mint first minted the Philharmoniker in 1989 and it was the first silver coin to be issued in Euros, it is the only large scale silver coin produced as legal tender in Europe.

Austrian Philharmoniker Coin Design

The reverse of the coin features a set of musical instruments (string bass, cellos, violins, bassoon, harp and Viennese horn) representing the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. The obverse design features the pipe organ within the Musikverein’s Golden Hall, a concert hall in the Innere Stadt borough of Vienna. This is where the actual Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra plays its music. The German words “REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH” (Republic of Austria) and “1 UNZE FEINSILBER” (1 ounce pure silver) are also minted on the obverse.

The Austrian Mint Background

The Austrian Mint, located in Vienna, is responsible for minting Austrian coins. Since 1989 it has been a public limited company and a subsidiary of Austria’s central bank Oesterreichische Nationalbank, which also has its headquarters in Vienna.

The Mint deals with both the design and stamping of the coins it produces. It also produces other coins, such as gold bullion and commemorative issues. The beautifully crafted coins minted in the very heart of Vienna are highly sought after by investors and collectors all over the world.
