Kangaroo Coin Background

Manufactured exclusively by The Perth Mint as the Australian Government’s official Gold and Silver Bullion Coin producer, these beautiful coins are legal tender in Australia ($1 AUD) and contain one full troy ounce of fine silver (31.1035 grams). The silver Kangaroo series was first produced in 2016. Each coin features the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the monetary denomination on the obverse while the reverse features a beautiful depiction of a jumping kangaroo.

The silver Australian Kangaroo bullion coin’s reverse has an authentication feature in the form of a micro-laser engraved letter ‘A’. It is within the first A of AUSTRALIAN and it is only detectable under a magnifying glass.

Kangaroo Coin Design

From 1986 to 1989, the reverse of these coins pictured various Australian gold nuggets. With the 1989 proof edition, the design was changed to feature different kangaroos, a more world-recognised symbol of Australia. The coins are today more commonly referred to as “Gold Kangaroo Coins“. On the obverse face there of each coin is a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.

The Perth Mint Background

The Perth Mint opened in 1899 in response to the discovery of rich gold deposits in Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie. The heritage building was situated in the heart of Perth, the capital and largest city of Western Australia. It was Australia’s third branch of Britain’s Royal Mint – the others being the Sydney Mint and the Melbourne Mint (both closed). In 1970, the authority for The Perth Mint was transferred to the State of Western Australia. The Perth Mint gold and silver bullion coins have been issued as legal tender under the authority of the Australian Federal Government ever since.
