George and The Dragon Coin Background

The legend of St George and the dragon makes a dramatic return to coins with a new bullion coin range from The Royal Mint. The contemporary reverse design by Jody Clark features a dynamic depiction of the fight between good and evil, with St George driving his lance into the body of the beast lurking below his rearing horse.

Dating from around the eleventh century, the tale of St George and the dragon has been interpreted many times, with renowned artists finding inspiration in the legend.
It has proved an enduring theme for coin designs, with Benedetto Pistrucci’s depiction on the reverse of The Sovereign perhaps the most celebrated.

The obverse effigy has been crafted by Martin Jennings, each of these coins features the official portrait of His Majesty, King Charles III
