1kg Silver Australian Koala Coin

Manufactured exclusively by The Perth Mint as the Australian Government’s official Gold and Silver Bullion Coin producer, these beautiful coins are legal tender in Australia ($30 AUD) and contain one kilogram of fine .999 silver.

Beginning in 2007, the Perth Mint introduced the Silver Koala series, each year features a different design of this animal that is so strongly associated with Australia. This year’s design by Ing Ing Jong depicts a Koala holding onto a tree branch. The koala is well-adapted to Australia’s dry conditions as they do not actually require water to drink.  Receiving all the moisture they need from eucalyptus leaves, koalas spend most of their time in these trees for this reason, and because they are known to sleep among the shaded branches for up to 20 hours each day.

Australian Silver Koala coins are produced in both 1 oz and 1 kilogram size, with the mintage of the 1 oz size capped at just 300,000 coins. This makes the Australian Silver Koala one of the most collectable bullion series. The Koala, along with the Kookaburra, Lunar Series, and Kangaroo form what has continued to be a robust line of high quality bullion products from the Perth Mint of Australia. Issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965, the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the 2018 year-date, and the monetary denomination are shown on each coin’s obverse.

The Perth Mint Background

The Perth Mint opened in 1899 in response to the discovery of rich gold deposits in Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie. The heritage building was situated in the heart of Perth, the capital and largest city of Western Australia. It was Australia’s third branch of Britain’s Royal Mint – the others being the Sydney Mint and the Melbourne Mint (both closed). In 1970, the authority for The Perth Mint was transferred to the State of Western Australia. The Perth Mint gold and silver bullion coins have been issued as legal tender under the authority of the Australian Federal Government ever since.
