Sovereign Coin Background

The George V Gold Sovereign and Half UK Gold Sovereign were minted by the Royal Mint from 1911-1932. George V ruled during a difficult era for the Royal family and Great Britain. He reigned throughout World War I and during the Great Depression. It is for this reason that the production of the George V sovereigns was sporadic and does not span the duration of his reign, unlike his predecessors.

Within days of the outbreak of World War I in August 1914 the British Treasury had issued £1 banknotes and was urging the public not to withdraw gold sovereigns. Within a few months the government legislated to the same effect which meant that the Gold Standard had ended. The 1914 George V Gold Sovereign was therefore, the last type of gold sovereign ever to circulate as coinage in Britain.

Gold continues to be desired, as it has been for centuries, for both its beauty and value, sovereign coins are an affordable way to appreciate its precious qualities. Sovereigns are a staple of any UK bullion investors portfolio for many different reasons, issued as UK legal tender, each coin is meticulously struck by The Royal Mint from 22 carat gold.

As well as being highly competitively priced, sovereigns are UK legal tender and hence Capital Gains Tax free, which is an important factor to consider when choosing what to form of metal to buy. By purchasing UK coins eligible for CGT exemption you can avoid paying tax over the profit you make, the amount of this CGT free profit won’t affect or decrease the limit of tax free profit on your other investments either.

The UK government assures the weight and purity of each coin it produces, Britannia coins are designed for mass storage and safe transit, providing exceptional convenience for all gold bullion coin buyers.

The price of Sovereign coins closely tracks the gold price due to their gold content, these coins are highly recognisable and highly liquid, there will always be someone waiting to buy them from you when you are ready to sell.

Gold sovereigns are currently issued with an unlimited mintage, if you are looking for limited edition UK coins we also stock other series including the Tudor Beasts and Queen’s Beasts.

History

Issued by The Royal Mint, full Gold Sovereigns are one of the most popular and best known gold coins in the world. Gold Sovereigns are sought by both collectors and investors alike, they offer a sense of luxury, history and symbolism that no other coin can match. With its bold St George and the Dragon design, it has become an internationally recognised symbol of unrivalled accuracy, integrity and strength. To this day, it remains trusted, traded, respected and admired the world over.

There have been Sovereigns in circulation since 1489 with the Half Sovereign being first produced in 1544 during King Henry VIII reign. The modern Sovereign Gold coin was first issued in 1817 when the sovereign replaced the Guinea, it became legal tender in the United Kingdom with a face value of £1 Sterling. These days, because the value of the gold used to create the coin is much higher than the face value, the price of the Sovereign is closely connected to the gold spot price which changes each day.

These coins were not just minted in Britain: several mints in Australia, two in India and one in South Africa have produced them in the past. In the present day all sovereigns are all minted by the Royal Mint in the UK. Sovereigns were included in the survival kit of soldiers that fought in World War II and Desert Storm because they have been an internationally recognised form of monetary exchange for 500 years and are trusted the world over.  Our clients continue to love them and their size means that they remain versatile and can conceivably still be used as a means of exchange.
