Austrian Philharmoniker Background

In November of 1988, The Austrian Mint was authorised to produce one, and fractional ounce gold bullion coins. First minted in 1989, the Gold Philharmoniker was offered in one and one-quarter ounce sizes. This was then followed in later years by the tenth ounce (1991) and the half ounce (1994). By 1990 it was the best selling coin in Europe and then in multiple years after, declared as the best selling gold coin in the world by the World Gold Council.

It was the first ever silver coin to be issued in Euros, it is also the only large scale bullion coin produced as legal tender in Europe.

Austrian Philharmoniker Coin Design

The reverse of the coin features a set of musical instruments (string bass, cellos, violins, bassoon, harp and Viennese horn) representing the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. The obverse design features the pipe organ within the Musikverein’s Golden Hall, a concert hall in the Innere Stadt borough of Vienna. This is where the actual Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra plays its music. The German words “REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH” (Republic of Austria) and “1 UNZE FEINSILBER” (1 ounce gold) are also minted on the obverse.

The Austrian Mint Background

The Austrian Mint, located in Vienna, is responsible for minting Austrian coins. Since 1989 (the same year it started producing the gold Austrian Philharmoniker coin), it has been a public limited company and a subsidiary of Austria’s central bank Oesterreichische National bank, which also has its headquarters in Vienna.

The Mint deals with both the design and stamping of the coins it produces. It also produces other coins, such as gold bullion and commemorative issues. The beautifully crafted coins minted in the very heart of Vienna are highly sought after by investors and collectors all over the world.
