The coin has a face value of £50 (CYP). This currency is now defunct as Cyprus moved over to the Euro in 2008. There was an irrevocable exchange rate set, which means that the face value is technically equivalent to €29.26.
Coin Design
The obverse of this coin bears an effigy of Archbishop Makarios. He was a well-loved Archbishop and eventually President of Cyprus.
The coin reads: ‘•ΑΡΧΙΕΠ•ΜΑΚΑΡΙΟΣ ΠΡΟΕΔΡΟΣ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑΣ ΚΥΠΡΟΥ’ around the edge. With the years 1960 1977 to the right of his effigy.
Despite serving as Archbishop of Cyprus from 1950, Makarios only became President in 1960. The coin reads 1960-1977, marking the span between the beginning of his presidency to his death in 1977.
The reverse reads Republic of Cyprus at the top and 1977 at the bottom. In the centre is an outline of Cyprus, surrounded by the face value, dolphins and a ship with sails.
