Beowulf & Grendel Coin Background
This is the first coin in the 3rd Myths and Legends series, celebrating the renowned story of this unique Celtic Briton King.
Estimated to have originated between the eight and eleventh centuries, Beowulf is the longest surviving poem written in Old English. The epic tale of the fearsome warrior and later king blends fantasy with history to build a legend.
Now, the titular character Beowulf and his first enemy, the swamp monster Grendel, appears on the first coin of a three-coin series dedicated to the epic Beowulf poem. David Lawrence has expertly crafted a reverse design showcasing the ferocious battle between Beowulf and Grendel- the first of Beowulf’s encounters.
The Royal Mint also produces Beowulf coins in 1oz Silver.
Beowulf & Grendel Coin Design
This is the first coin in the third series of the British myths and legends collection. The first series features the legend of Robin Hood and the second features King Arthur along with his cohorts.
David Lawrence has depicted Beowulf in a medieval setting, fighting a rather ferocious looking Grendel, the swamp monster. Grendel was the first of Beowulf’s grand encounters.
