Tenth Ounce Gold Britannia Coin – Design

From their launch in 1997 up until January 2023, these hugely popular, well loved Gold Britannia coins have featured the delightful effigy of The Late Queen Elizabeth II on the coins obverse, designed by Jody Clark.  A second Britannia design was released by the Royal Mint in January 2023 following the accession of His Majesty King Charles III, making this the first Britannia coin not bearing the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.  The reverse of these coins will still proudly boast the classic Britannia design by Philip Nathan, while the obverse marks a big day in the history books with the handsome new King Charles III portrait by Martin Jennings.

Tenth Ounce Gold Britannia Coin – Background

Gold Britannia coins continue to be desired for both beauty and value. Britannia coins are an accessible way of owning your very own bullion and are a staple for any UK bullion investor’s portfolio. Issued as UK legal tender, each coin is struck by The Royal Mint meticulously from 999.9 fine gold.

As well as being highly competitively priced, Britannia coins are UK legal tender and hence Capital Gains Tax-free, which is an important factor to consider when choosing what to form of metal to buy. By purchasing UK coins eligible for CGT exemption you can avoid paying tax over the profit you make, the amount of this CGT free profit won’t affect or decrease the limit of tax-free profit on your other investments either.

The 2023 Britannia design is different from the previous coin designs in a number of ways. One of the main reasons for doing this was so that The Royal Mint could add a new level of protection to the coin by using technology so enhanced that it reduces the ability for forgeries.

Britannia coins are currently struck in a number of different sizes and metals, as a distributor of Royal Mint products we also currently stock the following:  1oz Gold (Mixed Year), 1/4oz Gold1/10oz Gold and 1oz Silver.

Britannia Coin Design

The legendary figure of Britannia has symbolised Britain’s strength and integrity on coinage since Roman times. Little wonder then that the Britannia with such a depth of history behind it. The Britannia has been a popular choice with bullion investors ever since its introduction in 1987. This new specification combined with its tradition and integrity gives new life for today’s investment customer.

All 1oz gold Britannia’s contain one troy ounce (31.1035 grams) of gold. From 1987 until 2012 Britannia coins weighed slightly more than a troy ounce due to being alloyed with other metals, pre-2013 they were produced in .917 fineness (or 22-carat gold) with the non-gold component being copper until 1989 and silver from 1990. In 2013 The Royal Mint began producing Britannia coins in their current form of 999.9 fineness (24-carat gold).
