We are excited to announce the launch of the 2023 Gold Coronation Sovereign, available in sizes Half and Full.
This magnificent coin showcases the return of the iconic St George and the Dragon design. It also holds historical significance, bearing the effigy of King Charles with a crown—a design exclusive to this particular coin. This is unusual since traditionally male monarchs do not wear crowns on coins. We have been given to understand that the next sovereign after this, expected January 2024, is likely to revert to the more typical version.
The Coronation Sovereign Design
We are thrilled about the return of Benedetto Pistrucci’s classic St George and the Dragon design. It’s a symbol deeply ingrained in British culture and heraldry.
What truly sets the 2023 Coronation Sovereign apart is the obverse side, which showcases a unique effigy of King Charles III. King Charles looks regal and wears a crown on his head, representing his coronation this year.
This design sets the Sovereign apart from its predecessors, making it the only coin to feature King Charles’ effigy wearing a crown—a true collector’s treasure.

The History of St George and The Dragon
Saint George is one of the most iconic symbols in recent history. He’s been featured on the world-famous UK sovereign coin since 1817 (Royal Mint, 2020) and is considered one of the world’s most widely recognised coins.
But why? St George is a patron of modern Britain. He resonates with English values and represents honour and bravery. He also captures the classic embodiment of good conquering evil and represents heritage and tradition.
Italian engraver Benedetto Pistrucci deliberately depicted St George and the dragon to make the UK sovereign coin look as distinctive as possible. The reverse has rarely changed in 200 years, with only a handful of designs appearing.
The Memorial Sovereign
Production of the 2022 Memorial Sovereigns has now been superseded by the Coronation Sovereign with its George and the Dragon design on the reverse of the coin. We have a limited quantity of Memorial Sovereigns in stock but don’t expect to be able to source new coins for much longer.
The coin design changed for the 2022 Sovereign. It honoured the life and legacy of her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. In tribute to Her Majesty, the coin featured an intricate reinterpretation of the Royal Arms by Jody Clark.
If you are wanting to add this coin to your collection, we recommend you don’t wait long!
