About the Lunar Sheep:

In 2015 the Shēngxiào Collection continues with a coin to celebrate the Year of the Sheep. The second in the series of 12 Lunar coins to be struck for the United Kingdom has an intricate design created by Wuon-Gean Ho, once again blending British and Chinese heritage in an ounce of 999 fine silver.

Each year so many delight in the centuries-old tradition of exchanging gifts to welcome the Lunar New Year, giving coins or notes in traditional red envelopes to wish loved ones health, wealth and prosperity for the year ahead.

British Chinese artist and printmaker Wuon-Gean Ho’s first design for this enchanting series captured the spirit of the Year of the Horse. Now, for this second coin, she has created another fascinating reverse celebrating the sheep. Two Swaledale sheep are pivotal to her design – they symbolise family and friendship, while details such as the woolly coat and smooth horns highlighted to signify the sheep’s hardy nature.

Wuon-Gean Ho has been selected as the designer of the series of twelve coins that make up the prestigious Shēngxiào Collection. A respected artist and printmaker of British Chinese descent, she also achieved a licence as a veterinary surgeon when graduating from Cambridge University. Her veterinary experience has informed and inspired her designs for this captivating collection.

Wuon-Gean recalled memories of lambing time to create the two Swaledale sheep that are central to her design, and her research of ancient traditions around shepherding also contributed. Yan Tan Tethera is the ancient rhyme for counting sheep that is still used by some shepherds in parts of the United Kingdom today. Wuon-Gean Ho has included the Chinese character for sheep in her design, a pictograph that shows the head and horns of the animal. It is pronounced ‘yang’, so similar to the rhyme – just one example of how this talented artist has once again drawn upon both her British and Chinese heritage to create these special designs with such depth of story.
